Coimbatore: Archana Murugan, 21, a resident of Kozhikamuthi tribal settlement at Topslip in Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), is fond of cars. Her dream of driving cars will be realised soon, thanks to an upcoming training programme in automobile servicing.
Four young women and two young men from the settlement have been selected to undergo a three-month course with stipend and accommodation at 5K Professional Car Detailing Studio in Coimbatore.
The firm had attended a job fair conducted by ATR deputy field director M G Ganesan at Kozhikamuthi on Thursday. “Most of the young women and young men in the settlement have studied up to Class IX. But they did not get any job. The elephant camp at Kozhikamuthi can employ only 50 people. So, we organised a job fair,” said Ganesan.
Representatives of 5K Professional Car Detailing Studio handed over joining letters to the training programme to Archana, S Anandhi, B Jayasri, Devi Anbalagan, Raman Subramani and Pradeep on Thursday. “Ever since I dropped out of Class IX due to health issues, I have been dreaming of cars. But I don’t know how to drive one. After I learn automobile service, I will be able to drive cars on streets and hills,” Archana told TOI. Archana’s father Murugan is working in Kozhikamuthi elephant camp and her mother Sakthi is a homemaker. Her younger sister Akhila is a Class IV student.“There is no job opportunity in Kozhikamuthi tribal settlement. While women collect firewood from the reserve forest, men go to the plains for agricultural work. The 158 families in Kozhikamuthi want jobs to lead a good life like others,” said Archana.
Raman said he tried to clear the Tamil paper four times after failing in Class X. “I was roaming with my friends and did not learn anything. Now, I have an opportunity to learn automobile servicing,” he said.
The training programme will be held in Coimbatore, Ganesan said. “The firm will provide 10,000 as stipend and will take care of the accommodation of the six youngsters. After they complete the training, they will be deployed at the firm’s car service centre in Pollachi.”
Meanwhile, the youngsters are getting ready to join the training programme, which begins on Monday.
