West Herr Automotive Group has earned the Rochester’s Top Workplace designation as Top Large Employer for 2022.
Since its inception in 1950, the company has grown to become the largest automotive group in New York state and has sold over 1.2 million vehicles through its franchise locations in Monroe, Ontario, Erie and Niagara counties.
West Herr has a simple philosophy: To prioritize employees who in turn deliver the best experience possible to customers.
“Our employees’ personal lives affect their working life,” President and CEO Scott Bieler said. “Among practices that include job share options, diversity initiatives and employee service programs, we’ve recently modified our schedule.”

West Herr has shortened formerly long operating hours; locations that used to stay open into the night now close at 7 p.m.
Bieler understands the nuances of the industry well. He started out as a salesperson with the company 47 years ago and was one of only 45 employees. Now there are 2,500 people employed by the auto group.
With benefits and policies designed to enhance the working environment, many members of West Herr’s workforce are long-tenured. “We have one of the lowest turnover rates of any automotive group in the country,” he said.
To retain staff and attract new hires, the company pays employees competitively compared to their peers in the industry, a fact Bieler communicates with pride.
“We are in the top 10 percent in compensation for every employee in the company,” he said. Equitable pay has become even more of a priority for West Herr over the past two years because “the availability of employees is critical.”
Emphasizing worker satisfaction has served as a boon for the company and a factor in its success. Regarding human resources and talent acquisition, Bieler said, “We create an atmosphere where people want to stay but we hire the right people.”
